Most Beautiful Places in Uganda – Table of Contents

Romantic Places | Beautiful Places in Jinja | Off The Beaten Path | Nice Places to Visit In Kampala | Beautiful National Parks

Beautiful Uganda has a special place in my heart. Before visiting, the only thing I knew about the country was that you could see gorillas there.

Yet,  after my first visit to Uganda in 2018 it was easy to understand why it’s called the Pearl of Africa.

There were so many beautiful places in Uganda!

Some people don’t like re-visiting countries, but I love to travel to a country I’ve been to before because there is always something new to see.

I’ve returned in 2020 and 2021, and I’m pleasantly surprised to find more nice places to visit in Uganda each time.

There is so much more to Uganda than gorillas and it’s a country that everyone should see.

Want to Know the Most Beautiful Places in Uganda?

Look no further – I’ve compiled a list of 31 beautiful places in Uganda.

Romantic Places in Uganda

Let’s kick off the most beautiful places in Uganda list with some romantic lodges I’ve visited. During my second trip to Uganda, I traveled with my boyfriend. It was his first time on the African continent, and I knew it’d be an adventure, but I didn’t realize that Uganda is filled with many romantic places. All the lodges in this section are perfect for sharing with a loved one and would be great for a honeymoon.

1. Arcadia Lodge in Lake Bunyonyi

Arcadia Lodge - Lake Bunyonyi
Beauty Ranking: 10/10
Location: Lake Bunyonyi, South-West Uganda

Imagine waking up to this view every morning with bae?! Arcadia Lodge is not only one of the most beautiful places in Uganda, but it has one of the best views in the world (and I’ve traveled to over 70 countries!) If you speak to a Ugandan, they will tell you that Wakanda from Black Panther was based on this view. Most people visit Lake Bunyonyi after gorilla trekking, and it’s the perfect place to relax. Arcadia Lodge is one of the top lodges in Uganda. If you don’t have the budget to stay here, it’s still worth a visit to get an ariel view of the 29 islands of Lake Bunyonyi.

Travel Tip: If you book a room at Arcadia Lodge, ask for a room with a bathtub. This way, you can relax in a tub while taking in this view.

2. Rushaga Gorilla Lodge in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Rushaga Gorilla Lodge

Beauty Ranking: 9.4/10
Location: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, South-West Uganda

Once again – another drop-down gorgeous hotel view! Rushaga is a small village located outside one of the main entrances to gorilla trekking. Lush, green farmlands surround it. One of my favorite things about Rushaga Gorilla lodge is the huge windows. No joke – when I peed in the bathroom here, this is the view I’d look at. I will never forget this place as one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever used the restroom. This lodge has excellent service, and at night there are warm water bottles put in the bed, making it a perfect place to snuggle with your special someone.

Travel Tip: Make sure to walk around Rushaga. Grab a beer at the local bar (although it most likely will be a warm beer)

3. Top of the World Resort

Top Of the World Resort
Beauty Ranking: 8.9/10
Location: Kikangala, Western Uganda

When I was in Kampala, I went to a house party and met a friendly Ugandan girl, Rosette. She invited me to join her on a trip to Fort Portal, where she grew up. I was in for a treat since her family runs the Top of The World Resort, one of the most beautiful places to visit in Uganda! This resort is true to its name and is located at the top of a hill to show off surrounding crater lakes. I love this location because it’s secluded, and not many people know about it. This type of setting is perfect for a weekend trip away to enjoy the serenity in nature.

4. Mweya Safari Lodge

mweya safari lodge
Beauty Ranking: 8.9/10
Location: Queen Elizabeth National Park, Western Uganda

Mweya Safari Lodge provides high-quality service and overlooks the Kazinga Channel in Queen Elizabeth National park. This is one of the top-rated hotels in Uganda, and it’s a great place to rest in between safari drives. In this photo, you see that we are enjoying the pool with a panoramic view. Jumping into a pool after seeing wildlife is a combination for a day filled with happiness. The best part about this lodge is that you are in the middle of a reservation. It’s common to wake up and be greeted by warthogs and mongooses in your front window. You can also find hippos grazing in the evening if you are lucky.

Beautiful National Parks and Wildlife Reserves in Uganda

Rwenzori Mountains

Entry by James Ian of Travel Collecting

Rwenzori

Beauty Ranking: 9.5/10
Location: Rwenzori Mountains National Park, South-Western Uganda

The legendary snow-capped “Mountains of the Moon,” as often called, straddle the equator between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. From Kampala, you can take A-109 west all the way to Kasese, the gateway town to the mountains. The Rwenzori Mountains are a designated national park and are typically visited on a multi-day trek, staying in rustic mountain huts along the way.

There are six main massifs along the mountain range, each capped with snow and glaciers (though these are disappearing). “Rwenzori” means “Rain Maker” or “The Great Leaf in Which the Clouds are Boiled,” so it’s no surprise that it rains a lot. The weather has created boggy environments that are the perfect conditions for unique and wonderful plant life. From moss-covered rainforests to giant lobelias and alien-like ‘cabbage’ trees, the entire mountain range is like nowhere else on earth. Moon Lake (Lac de la Lune) is a highlight, thought to be Ptolemy’s source for the Nile. Nestled at the bottom of Mugusu Valley and surrounded by spectacular vegetation, it is out-worldly beautiful.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Beauty Ranking: 10/10
Location: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, South-Western Uganda

Bwindi is a beautiful forest filled with lush greenery and vines. It’s not easy to get to and requires at least one day of driving from Kampala or Entebbe. Gorilla trekking is the main attraction in Uganda, and for a good reason – it’s a surreal experience to get up close and personal to creatures that share 98.9% DNA with humans. It’s important to remember to look up while you are on a gorilla trek and appreciate the surroundings of the Bwindi forest. Gorilla Trekking is not a breeze in the park, especially in Bwindi. It’s called the Impenetrable forest for a reason! You are following wild animals and might end up hiking for 8 hours to find them. It’s essential to make sure you are prepared for the hike.

Travel Tip: Read this gorilla trekking packing list to be fully equipped.

Kibale National Park

Entry by Bella of Passport & Pixels

kibale national park

Beauty Ranking: 9.6/10
Location: Kibale National Park, Western Uganda

Uganda is blessed with 10 national parks, but Kibale National Park is one of the most beautiful. Kibale is located in the west of the country, about a five-hour drive from Kampala, making it pretty accessible for a long weekend trip away or as part of a bigger tour of Uganda. The main reason people visit Kibale is to go chimpanzee trekking. The animals are habituated to the presence of humans, meaning you can get quite close to them without risk of harm to either the chimpanzees or yourself. But chimpanzees aren’t the only attraction. The park covers 766 square kilometers (296 sq mi), with lush forest home to 12 other species of primates, other mammals including elephants, warthogs, and buffalo, and 325 species of birds. What’s more, the edges of the park are filled with lush farmland with colorful villages, where friendly locals pop out of their homes to say hello as you walk by. Gorillas may get most of the glory in Uganda, but Kibale is not to be missed!

Semliki Wildlife Reserve

Entry by Linda of Muy Linda Travels

Semliki Wildlife Reserve
Beauty Ranking: 8.5/10
Location: Western Uganda

Surrounded by lush green grasslands and forests, The Semliki Wildlife Reserve is one of Uganda’s oldest conservation areas, located in a stunning part of Central Africa. The Reserve spans more than 500 square kilometers in the Albertine Rift Valley in the wilderness of Western Uganda. Wildlife is abundant here. Buffalo, Baboons, monkeys, bushbuck, waterbuck, and a wide array of birdlife are easy to find. The Reserve is also home to elephants at certain times of the year. In the wet season, Semliki is a bird watcher’s paradise. Take a morning or evening safari drive and enjoy wildlife spotting and incredible, dramatic skies in an unbelievably photogenic corner of the world.

Located between Lake Albert and the majestic Rwenzori Mountains, the Semliki Wildlife Reserve is near the border with the DRC. Fort Portal is the nearest town, and it takes around 1 hour to drive there from Semliki, 4 hours to Kampala, and 5 hours to the airport in Entebbe. You can fly to the Semliki airstrip beside the Semliki Safari Lodge, a luxurious bush retreat and a fabulous place to stay if you plan to visit Semliki in Uganda.

Off The Beaten Path Nice Places in Uganda

This section provides beautiful places in Uganda that won’t be on other bloggers’ sites. That’s because these are hidden gems I have found throughout my trips to Uganda. Each of these places is not only stunning but holds a special place in my heart.

Josh’s Backpacker’s

Off the beaten path uganda
Beauty Ranking: 9/10
Location: Lake Bunyonyi, South Western Uganda

Josh’s Backpackers is a peaceful oasis and provides an authentic experience of local life in Lake Bunyonyi. It takes one hour to reach Josh’s Backpackers on a speedboat from the mainland. The owner, Josh, built his home and the guesthouses on the property. Almost everything you need for daily life you can find on the property. There’s chicken for eggs, avocado trees, farmland, and solar energy. I initially connected with Joh via Couchsurfing, and he showed me a different side of Lake Bunyonyi. Josh is extremely handy, and he builds everything with love. During the day, you can go on a hand-made canoe, dip in the lake, or maybe Josh will teach you how to build something. This guesthouse is a hidden gem and a great place to escape and unwind. If you like genuine and unique travel experiences, definitely book a stay here!

Beautiful Lakes, Waterfalls & Other Bodies of Water In Uganda

Kazinga Channel

Entry by Corinne Vail of Reflections Enroute

Beauty Ranking: 8.8/10
Location: Queen Elizabeth National Park, Western Uganda

The Kazinga Channel, one of the best sights in Queen Elizabeth National Park, links the two lakes of Lake George and Lake Edward. It is 32 kilometers long and is teeming with amazing wildlife. The national park is one of the most visited in all of Uganda with its lions, elephants, and the Maramagambo Forest.

Taking a boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel allows spectacular views of the surrounding area plus an up-close look at the wildlife. While there, we saw hippos, crocodiles, elephants, antelope, warthogs, and a plethora of birdlife.

The nearest city is located right near the park. Kasese has everything you need if you are not staying in the resorts, such as hotels, restaurants, and grocery stores. Fort Portal is also a lovely city, and it’s only 1.5 hours away by car.

Lake Victoria

Entry by Bella of Passport & Pixels

lake victoria beautiful places in uganda
Beauty Ranking: 8/10
Location:
Southern Uganda

Covering over 23,000 square miles, Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa and the world’s largest tropical lake. It’s shared between Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya, and it’s also one of the sources of the legendary River Nile. But its size is not the only reason why a visit to Lake Victoria is one of the top things to do in Uganda. It’s also beautiful: an enormous freshwater lake teeming with wildlife, bordered by lush wetlands and hidden beaches, and dotted with tiny islands.

One of the best ways to visit Lake Victoria is to head to the town of Entebbe. Entebbe is less than two hours from Kampala by car, making it easily accessible and very popular with Ugandans taking weekend trips out of the city. There’s a vibrant waterfront area with hotels, bars, and restaurants, and you can take boat rides and fishing trips out on the lake – though be warned, swimming is not recommended because of the hippos and crocodiles! Alternatively, get the ferry from Entebbe to the idyllic Ssese Islands, an archipelago of eighty-four islands in the northwestern part of the lake which are often overlooked by tourists, and so perfect for escaping from daily life.

Lake Albert

Entry by Linda of Muy Linda Travels

Lake Albert Uganda
Beauty Ranking: 7.5/10
Location: Western Uganda

An early morning boat trip on Lake Albert in western Uganda is a magical experience to include if you’re planning to visit Uganda. The lake’s still water is like a mirror, perfectly reflecting the clouds in the sky. Birdlife is abundant, and rare shoebills live on the grass islands in the middle of the lake. Spotting one of these prehistoric-looking birds is a real treat. The waters of Lake Albert carry the parasite bilharzia, so it’s not a good idea to swim or paddle in the water. Still, you can enjoy the stunning scenery and watch the local fishers working out on the water.

Named after the British Prince Albert, Lake Albert lies in the Central Rift Valley on Uganda’s border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The nearest town is Fort Portal, around 140 kilometers away. You can fly to the Semliki airstrip beside the Semliki Safari Lodge, and Lake Albert is about half an hour from the lodge by road.

Fort Portal

Entry by Rai of A Rai of Light

fort portal uganda

Uganda, one of the safest countries in Africa, is renowned for rich biodiversity, natural beauty, welcoming people, and amazing places to visit. One such place is Fort Portal, located in the Kabarole District of western Uganda. Affectionately referred to as the Tourism city of the country, it lies just over 190 mi from Kampala and can be reached on a 4-hour journey by road. Highlights of a visit to Fort Portal include Queen Elizabeth National Park, Bigodi Wetlands Sanctuary, Tooro Botanical gardens, and the Amabeere Caves. The best time to visit the region is during the winter months of November to February when the weather is conducive to discovering the lakes, forests, grasslands, and marshes that make this area so special. Fort Portal is a highlight of any visit to the country and should not be missed.

Gorilla Trekking Packing List – Table of Contents

What To Wear Gorilla Trekking? | Other Items To Pack | Pre & Post Trekking Essentials |Recommended Travel Insurance | FAQ

“What should I bring to Gorilla trekking?”

If you have this question, you have made it to the right page. I have compiled the ultimate gorilla trekking packing list for you.

In this “Gorilla Trekking Packing List” guide, I let you know what to pack for gorilla trekking so you don’t make the mistake of showing up in shorts and sandals.

To find gorillas in their natural habitats, you have to trek through thick vegetation in the rainforest. Oftentimes there is no trail, and guides even carry machetes to cut through the terrain. It’s important to be prepared and bring the right items.

I have gone on gorilla tours in both the DRC and Uganda, and it seriously is one of the best activities I’ve ever done.

P.S – I am returning to Uganda for the 4th time to run a group trip in 2025.

The endangered mountain gorilla population has slowly been increasing. Currently, 1000 gorillas live across Bwindi and Mgahinga National Parks in Uganda, Virunga National Park in the DRC, and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda.

Gorilla tours are expensive, but the experience is worth it, and the tourism dollars help with the conservation efforts.

This gorilla trekking packing list is built from:

  • personal experience gorilla trekking in the DRC once and Uganda four times.

Although the landscape varies slightly depending on the park you visit, this gorilla trekking packing list applies to Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC.

Note: The hikes in Uganda are more strenuous and tend to take longer.

WHAT TO WEAR GORILLA TREKKING

Before I go into the detailed list, here’s an infographic of the main items I recommend. You can find a link for each item below.

Infographic: Gorilla Trekking Uganda – What to Wear

Gorilla Trekking Packing List

Quick Links:

a. gardening gloves | b. Long-Sleeve Shirt | c. Waterproof Pants | d. Poncho | e. Trekking Boots | f. headband | g. Insect Repellent | h. Selfie Stick| i. Water Bottle | j. Bio-Degradable Toilet Paper

Boots for Gorilla Trekking

It’s possible to go in regular sneakers, but waterproof hiking boots are highly recommended because you never know which terrain you will be in. Trails can get muddy, and it’s possible to hike up to 8 hours. Hiking boots provide ample ankle support.

In Uganda, we had to follow gorillas down a hill filled with vines. I was thrilled to have hiking boots!

Gardening Gloves For Gorilla Trek

This might seem overkill, but remember, you are in a rainforest and not following a trail. Gardening gloves help navigate through thick, tangled vines and allow you to grab onto plants and tree branches for support while hiking. Gloves are helpful and provide protection from nettles and thorns.

When I trekked the DRC, gardening gloves weren’t needed because the vegetation was manageable, but gloves are recommended for Uganda and Rwanda.

Clothes for Mountain Gorilla Trek

Wear clothes that blend in with nature, like greys, browns, and greens. DO NOT wear bright colors, camouflage, or animal prints. You don’t want a silverback to mistake you for a leopard.

  • Long Pants: Long trousers will protect you from things like scratches and ants. If the pants are water-resistant, that’s even better.

Female Recommendation:

I highly recommend Athleta’s Trekking North Jogger pants! Both times I went gorilla trekking, I hiked in these, and they were great. I love these pants since they are versatile. They are practical to hike in, yet also stylish enough to wear every day.

pants for gorilla trekking

Male Recommendation:

These are the #1 Best Seller water-resistant hiking pants on Amazon.

If you are looking for breathable and sustainable clothing, I recommend the brand Koup. I love their shirts, and honestly, if you purchase the long-sleeve shirt, you don’t have to stress about getting too hot. The fabric is very light! They have shirts for both men and women.

gorilla trekking hiking shirt
  • Optional: Short-Sleeved Shirt: If you want to wear layers, you can also get a short-sleeved shirt. Note: exposed skin will get scratched, but there are parts of the hike where you don’t have to worry about spiky thorns and insect bites. I also recommend Koup.
  • Leg Gaiters – Don’t know what a gaiter is? Neither did I, until I went gorilla trekking! Leg gaiters are recommended for Uganda and Rwanda treks. Gaiters help keep all the critters away from getting underneath your socks or pants.
  • Tall Socks – Tuck your trousers in your socks. My favorite sock brand is Bombas. Seriously, these socks are amazing and keep your feet dry if there is rain.

  • Rain Jacket or Poncho: No matter if you trek in the dry or rainy season, you are in a rainforest, so rain is unpredictable and can fall at any time. A rain jacket is handy.
  • Headband and Hair Ties: I recommend getting a bandeau since it has multiple uses (headband, scarf, mask). For hair ties, you must purchase from Soulvation Society. These hair ties are comfortable and versatile – they double as bracelets, so more bang for your buck! Plus, the company is owned by a bad-ass female #SupportSmallBusinesses

WHAT TO PACK GORILLA TREKKING

Tip: Hire a porter, so you have less weight on your back, and you can help support someone local.

Toiletries and Medicine

  • Malaria Pills: You can pick these up at a local pharmacy.
malaria prevention

You can purchase malaria pills from Runway Health

  • Insect Repellant: I like using repellent wipes because I can put them in a carry-on
.

Gear + Other Essentials

  • Camera: This is a once in a lifetime experience! Bring a good camera to capture this once in a lifetime experience. I recommend the Sony Alpha A6000. It’s a mirrorless camera that is great for beginner photographers.
  • Water Bottle or Camel Pouch: I always travel with a filtered water bottle since it allows me to drink tap water from all over the world. I have used both LifeStraw and GRAYL. I recommend the GRAYL bottle, and you can read my full review here.
  • Selfie Stick: Who doesn’t want a gorilla selfie?! Smartphone cameras are a great way to catch a selfie. When I was in the DRC I used the Pixel 2 phone and captured photos like this:
gorilla trekking packing list
  • Binoculars: Although not necessary for gorilla trekking, it’s wise to have binoculars if you are going on other safaris throughout Uganda. The binoculars linked below also have a universal phone adaptor, so you can easily take pictures through the binoculars.
<
  • Lunch or Snacks – Gorilla trekking is unpredictable, it can take 30 minutes or 8 hours to find a family. You can purchase some energy-producing snacks once in Rwanda or Uganda.
  • Sunglasses

Documents and Money

  • Passport (with 6 months validity)
  • Local Currency: to tip your guide ($10 for each guide)
  • Money Belt
  • Yellow Fever Vaccine Card
  • Gorilla Permit (Your tour company will provide)

PRE/POST TREKKING ESSENTIALS

Here is a list of items that will be useful to have before and after the gorilla trek.

  • Sweater: Yes, even in Africa, you need a sweater. It can get cold in the mornings and evenings in the parks.
  • Travel Scarf: Another option to keep you warm. I love the WayPoint Goods travel scarf because it’s comfortable, has cool designs, and doubles as an inconspicuous purse!
travel scarf
  • Shorts: Wear comfortable shorts to relax in
  • Pajamas: To get a good night’s sleep
  • Sandals: Chacos are my go-to travel sandal. They are extremely practical and long-lasting. I wear mine almost every day.
  • Swimwear: Many of the hotels have pools to enjoy after a day of trekking.

FAQ

Q: What To Wear Gorilla Trekking In Uganda?

If you are looking for an Uganda packing list, tall socks are among the most essential things to pack. There are many creepy crawlers in Bwindi, so you want to make sure no ants climb into your shoes. I also recommend gardening gloves and hiking boots since the trek takes longer in Uganda. Mgahinga National Park is at a higher altitude, so it can be colder than other parks. Be sure to bring a sweater for chilly evenings.

Also, Gorilla trekking is not the only attraction in Uganda. I recommend spending at least one week in Uganda to explore the beauty of this underrated country. I am hosting a 8-Day tour throughout Uganda; click here for more details.

Q: What To Wear Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda?

Volcanoes National Park is at a higher altitude so that it can get colder. Bring a sweater for chilly evenings. Also, gaiters are recommended to protect from stinging nettles.

Q: What To wear Gorilla Trekking in DRC?

My trek in the DRC was pretty easy and only took an hour. Gardening gloves are not necessary.

Q: Do I need to bring anything extra due to COVID?
  • A Negative covid test ( taken 72 hours prior to arrival in Uganda)
  • A mask (preferably a surgical or N95 type). The DRC always required a mask even before COVID, to protect the gorillas against human viruses.
Q: What travel insurance to buy for gorilla trekking?

RoamRight is a great, affordable insurance option with excellent customer service. RoamRight annual plans start at ~$200 per year, which is wise if you go on more than one trip per year. It’s $135 for an annual plan.

I hope this gorilla trekking packing list was useful! In the comments, let me know if you have any questions.

Also, congrats! You have made the best decision to see silverback gorillas and their families in Africa!

Couchsurfing review – is it still worth it?

The first time I used Couchsurfing was in 2012 on my first solo trip backpacking through Europe. In 2012 Couchsurfing was a great web application and I connected with locals in London and Stockholm. These cities are notorious for having high accommodation prices, which is what initially made me interested in Couchsurfing, but after I surfed a couple of places, I realized Couchsurfing is much more than just a free place to stay.

How does Couchsurfing work?

What is Couchsurfing? Well, it is one of my favorite travel apps!

If you have never heard of Couchsurfing before, let me break it down real quick! As a solo traveler, it is one of the best ways to meet people around the world. Couchsurfing connects locals with people visiting their respective city.

A Host offers a free place, usually a couch, to stay.

A Surfer is a traveler who will sleep for free in someone’s house.

But why would a host offer their place for free? There has to be a catch!

There are several reasons why hosts offer their place to stay:

  • It is a way to meet new people from around the world.
  • The host wants to be a surfer when they travel, so they host to build more reviews so that they can get accepted when they send out Couchsurfing requests.
  • They love the Couchsurfing community and want to give back, by hosting other travelers.

How Has Couchsurfing Changed?

Is Couchsurfing still a thing? Although Couchsurfing has lost popularity over the years due to Airbnb, it is still alive! Here are the significant changes I’ve noticed:

Fewer activities posted – The major shift I have noticed in Couchsurfing is that there are fewer activities posted. In 2012, I was in Sweden and saw a Couchsurfing Stockholm event to play Brännboll, a Swedish game similar to baseball. Brännboll was the perfect Couchsurfing event because it introduced me to something native to Sweden and allowed me to make new friends. Nowadays I never check the activities in a particular city, because there aren’t that many and the ones that are listed aren’t as interesting.

Men treat it like the new tinder – Some members treat Couchsurfing like a dating site, which is off-putting towards women. Please make sure to read reviews to avoid awkward encounters. Also, if you stay with an overly aggressive host, write a review so others can be informed.

Less CouchSurfing requests –  As a free member, you can only send 10 messages to hosts per week. If you pay for a membership, then you can send an unlimited amount of surfing requests. This change is positive because it helps decrease mindless Couchsurfing requests. Since you only have a limited number of messages per week, there is a higher incentive to research the hosts and write a thoughtful note.

Is Couchsurfing Free?

Short Answer: Couchsurfing is free for certain countries, but users from Banked and Developed countries must pay a small monthly or yearly fee.

While Couchsurfing used to be free for all users, in May 2020, Couchsurfing made a sudden announcement that required a majority of the users to make a mandatory “donation” to access their accounts. I did not like how Couchsurfing handled this announcement because there should have been a warning before locking people out of their accounts.

Couchsurfing received a lot a backlash about this decision, and you can find their response to the negative feedback here.

Yet, for US citizens, the Couchsurfing cost is affordable, with a monthly fee of $2.39, or a yearly fee of $14.29.  If this fee helps keep Couchsurfing alive, then I am okay with it.

It’s important to note that the monthly fee is only applicable to people who live in certain countries.

“Unbanked” or developing countries maintain free access to the Couchsurfing community. This is an important aspect for me because I love to Couchsurf in more remote places. I don’t want Couchsurfing to become less accessible to countries or communities that can’t afford this monthly fee.

The Couchsurfing app has not publicly released which countries are behind a paywall, but a Reddit user compiled a list that you can find here.

5 Reasons Why You Should Still Couchsurf

Although Couchsurfing has changed over the years, I still highly recommend it, especially for a solo long-term traveler. Here are the top 5 reasons to still Couchsurf:
1. Save money – Couchsurfing is free, which is great for your wallet! As a courtesy, offer to pay for a drink or meal for your Couchsurfing host. Or bring something small from your home country.
2. Travel like a local – This is the real benefit of Couchsurfing. Take advantage of the local knowledge your host has. The ideology is that CS facilitates cultural exchange. Having access to someone local is valuable since you have an insiders guide to different things to see, types of restaurants to try, and fun activities to do.
3. Instant friend – I Couchsurf in places where I don’t know anyone because I immediately have someone to hang out with. Couchsurfing is ideal for solo travelers, but it’s also possible to surf with one or two other people.
4. Improved review systems – Couchsurfing has enhanced their rating systems, so people aren’t afraid to leave bad reviews. In the past, hosts and surfers could write reviews whenever they wanted – if a surfer wrote a bad review than the host could retaliate and also leave a bad review, which led to everyone only writing good reviews. Now, after a stay, the host and surfer have 2 weeks to write a review. Once both have written a review, it becomes public. If only the host or surfer writes a review, it will still be public in 2 weeks, but the opposite party can’t change or do a new review after reading their evaluation.
5. Keep the community going – Yes, Couchsurfing is free, which is an excellent way to save money, but the actual benefit is the community. In the current age of Airbnb, the people who still host on Couchsurfing are more interested in making connections and sharing their culture than trying to make extra money. Let’s keep this “pay it forward” community together because connecting people is one of the most important things about traveling.

How to get people to accept your Couchsurfing Request

  • Introduce yourself – When you introduce yourself, think about what things make you interesting. Why would someone want to have you in their home? i.e., My name is Kesi, and I’m from NYC. I’ve been traveling around the world for 4 years.
  • Be personal – read the whole profile of the host and some reviews. Find something on the profile that interests you and mention it in your request. Some hosts get several requests per day, so it’s important to give the impression that there is a specific reason why you would want to stay with that person. Find some connection. i.e.,– I see that you have traveled to Mozambique. I’ve always wanted to go there and would love to hear your stories!
  • Offer Something – I love cooking, so I always offer to cook a meal when I’m a surfer. Think of something useful you can share, whether it is travel stories, a gift from your home country, or offering to buy a beer if you have a night out. i.e., By the way, I work as a chef on boats, and if you are interested would love to cook one night. Maybe you can teach me some cooking techniques from your country?
  • Be flexible – remember people are opening up their homes to you. You have to follow all of their rules. Sometimes there is no extra key, so you have to leave the house when the host is not home. Also, you might stay a couple of days with one host and then switch to another host. Let your host know that you are flexible. i.e., I would appreciate it if you could host me for a couple of days. Please let me know if these dates work with you, or if there is an alternative date that is better.

Couchsurfing Reviews from Around the World

Couchsurfing Review – Africa

My best Couchsurfing experiences were on the continent of Africa.

I surfed in Morocco, Uganda, and Tanzania. The hosts in the countries truly embody the CS spirit, and their sole mission is to show you the local life in their town.

One reason why African hosts are the best is that CS is their only source of travel. For example, a Moroccan passport is hard and expensive to travel with since visas are required to visit different countries. It is easier for someone from Morocco to “travel” by participating in Couchsurfing and hosting surfers from around the world. Couchsurfing allows hosts to learn and interact with different cultures without actually being in a different country.

Below is a photo of my host from outside of Casablanca, Morocco. I called him my brother from another mother – afros unite! He went out of his way to show me around his city. Even though he comes from a low-income family, he bought me street food (snails!) because he wanted me to try local cuisine. Spending a couple of days with him and his family was a different, and enjoyable way to travel in Morocco.

My most unique CS experience was with Tobiko and staying with his family in a Masaai Village in Tanzania. I asked my Tobiko, “How did you find out about Couchsurfing?” He replied,

“I Googled how to make friends, and Couchsurfing popped up.”

Couchsurfing Review – Australia

I prefer to stay in hostels in Australia.

Australia is a very social place to backpack, especially the East cCoast. I tried Couchsurfing twice in Australia but realized that I would rather spend money and hang out in hostels. My CS hosts were always ready to party, but they weren’t always people I would necessarily want to hang out with. I would rather make friends on my own, and since Australia has extremely social hostels, I wasn’t in search of friends while on the continent. Couchsurfing Review – Europe

Accommodation is expensive in Europe, and Couchsurfing helps offset the cost.

Europe is the first place I ever Couchsurfed. Visiting major cities in Europe can be overwhelming. I prefer living like a local versus sightseeing all day. Couchsurfing in Europe is perfect for getting a sense of what it would be like if you lived in that city. With a plethora of options in each town, it’s always nice to have someone local with recommendations.

Couchsurfing Review as a Solo female

A solo female traveler has a higher chance of being accepted as a surfer when compared to a single male traveler. The reason is that women are not as threatening. Is it safe to surf with strangers? Every decision you make in life has an inherent risk, yet Couchsurfing strives to remain a safe space. Before accepting a host request, always have a backup option in case you feel uncomfortable. The worst plan is to solely rely on your host because if they end up being creepy, you need to find a safe place to go.

I have never had anything scary happen to me while I have Couchsurfed, but there is one time in Croatia where I felt uncomfortable and chose to remove myself from the situation. The guy I stayed with had over 100 reviews, but there were signs that he wanted to be more than just friends. The first sign was that he took my girlfriend and me out to a nice meal and paid for everything. With CS, since the host is already giving a free place to stay, nothing else free is expected. The second sign was that he would always walk around in his small underwear. It’s his house, so he can choose to wear what he wants. The final straw was when one night, he suggested I sleep in his bed instead of my bed. My bad vibe was confirmed after he asked me to share a bed, so I politely told him I would be leaving and found an Airbnb. Listen to your gut and make sure always to post reviews if anyone is treating Couchsurfing like a dating site.

Couchsurfing Alternatives

Here are some alternatives to Couchsurfing. I have not personally tried these websites, but other travelers have recommended them.

Free Alternatives

  • Bewelcome.org – This website is a smaller community filled with a lot of ex-Couchsurfers. Basically, everyone who got pissed off that the CS community changed and become low quality decided to join Bewelcome, which has the same values Couchsurfing originated with.
  • Trustroots.org – a non-profit hospitality exchange. It vows to always do what’s best for its members and has gained more popularity since Couchsurfing implemented mandatory fees.
  • Hospitalityclub.orgworldwide home sharing site offering free accommodation
  • Servas.org -This is the pioneer website and was around before there was even internet.

Paid Alternatives

  • Airbnb – a home sharing site where you can rent a single room, an entire apartment, or even a villa. One of the downsides of Couchsurfing is if you don’t bond with your host, you are awkwardly stuck with them. Sometimes it’s better to pay for accommodation, to have your own space. Airbnb is an excellent alternative because you can find hosts with a similar Couchsurfing mentality, who strive to provide a local experience, like my host in Split, Croatia. Airbnb is cheaper than staying in a hotel. Airbnb also allows you to book experiences, which are unique ways to see a city.

  • Veg Visits – a home sharing site that’s specifically for vegetarian and vegan accommodation. It’s excellent for the hosts, who don’t have to worry about guests cooking meat in their kitchen. And it’s also helpful for the travelers, as the hosts will be able to give them insider advice about the best places to eat out or shop for specialty items. Some hosts even offer the use of their kitchen to travelers who don’t need accommodation but are looking for a place to prepare their own meals. Users can even filter to see which hosts have blenders, food processors or other equipment.

Couchsurfing App Review: ♦♦♦♦♦ (5 out of 5) – Although Couchsurfing has changed since it’s inception, it is still one of my favorite ways to connect with locals while abroad.

I hope you enjoyed this couchsurfing.com review! For more couchsurfing.com reviews I recommend looking up FB travel groups or Reddit.
